Obituary - John James - 1937-2023
Everybody at Middlesex Tennis is saddened to learn of the death of our President John James (OBE), who passed away on 13 June following a recent stroke.
If there is such a thing as 'tennis royalty' then John was it - serving British Tennis and tennis around the world in a glittering career that is captured by the International Tennis Federation here.
John was a charismatic, warm, and friendly man who oozed enthusiasm for his beloved sport of Tennis. Although as a proud Welshman, we are sure Rugby
Union came a close second!
John was Middlesex County LTA President from 2003 and acting Chairman of the Board in 2021-2022 before our current Chair Phil Veasey came into post.
John was always keen to know everything about tennis in Middlesex; the players, the venues, the initiatives and was an avid supporter of the County teams.
He is fondly remembered by all who have served as professionals or Board members of Middlesex Tennis over the last 20 years. In particular - our Chair - Phil Veasey - counts him as one of his mentors. Phil remembers one occasion when he was working at the LTA. Phil was at Queens Club packing a minibus full of tennis equipment and balls to go on a school coaching tour of the north-east. John asked that every member of the LTA staff working at the then HQ to come out of their offices and see what was going on - and John roared at accountants and administrators - "this is how we are going to grow Tennis!".
Likewise, Mark Bullock - our Diversity and Inclusion Lead reflects - "John was a giant in the sport of tennis and his contribution to the sport at all levels immeasurable. His support and passion for disability tennis meant that he had a huge influence on my career at various stages whilst I was at
Nottingham Tennis Centre, the Welsh National Tennis Centre, the ITF and most recently at Middlesex Tennis".
We will remember a wise, knowledgeable gentleman, passionate about tennis, who always had an anecdote to share.
