The John James Disability Inclusion Award

The John James Disability Inclusion Award, presented by the Dan Maskell Tennis Trust and Middlesex Tennis, honours outstanding programmes that pioneer inclusive tennis and padel opportunities. Named in memory of John James OBE, former Middlesex Tennis President and a passionate advocate for disability tennis, this award provides grants of up to £1,500 to support and expand inclusive initiatives that help break down barriers and open up the sport.

This year, three exceptional projects were selected:

Rally Together at Mayfield

Mayfield Tennis Club’s disability programme launched in 2023 and now supports 18 regular players across various skill levels. The club’s yellow ball players have successfully integrated into mainstream club sessions, while its red and orange ball players, including wheelchair users, benefit from adapted equipment and creative coaching methods. The programme nurtures confidence, skill development, and social inclusion. The grant will help expand wheelchair tennis and fund an additional coach to increase capacity and ensure more players can take part.

Park Sports Inclusive Project

Based at Regent’s Park, Park Sports has delivered 120+ inclusive sessions, reaching over 1,000 participants. Their diverse programme includes Para-Standing Tennis, LGBTQ+ Socials, Women’s Only Tennis, and more. They work closely with local charities and community organisations to make tennis accessible to underrepresented groups. The grant will fund coach training, adaptive equipment, and free disability tennis sessions at their West London venues, further expanding their reach.

SEND Tennis at Shaftesbury Secondary School

This project provides specialist coaching for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), many of whom would otherwise have little access to sport. Running three weekly sessions at Shaftesbury High School, the programme focuses on individual skill development, confidence building, and leadership pathways. The funding will help sustain these vital sessions, ensuring children with SEND can continue to enjoy structured, inclusive tennis and develop important life skills.

These inspiring initiatives embody John James’ legacy, making tennis truly welcoming and accessible for all. With continued support, we hope to see these programmes grow, inspire, and change lives.
